Volunteer Comments
Last fall I spent hours hauling logs in Cheyenne Canon Park. It was hard work and I was sore the next day, but I felt a great sense of accomplishment and bonded with the other volunteers on the project. S.D. |

Open Space Volunteers, Colorado Springs

It is truly amazing what a small band of people can accomplish in roughly five hours time. Nearly 60 volunteers and crew leaders contributed to some significant improvements to the area around the Manitou Incline on Saturday, May 12. Many, many thanks to those who got up early to pitch in and to those who just happened by and decided to volunteer on the spot. Many thanks also to REI, the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, the City of Manitou Springs, C & C Sand and Stone, Incline Friends,Trails and Open Space Coalition, Friends of the Peak and D'Vine Wine. Fencing and signs were installed, social trails were closed and reclamation of those areas was begun. There is still a lot of work to be done so there will be more volunteer opportunities in the future and of course you can learn about them right here when they arise.
Fencing installed around the Barr Parking Lot and erosion matting covering just two of the several social trails that were closed off and re-seeded.
Incline Friends are actively involved in fund-raising and working to see that the Incline becomes legal and sustainable. You too can be an Incline Friend! |

Have a Saturday free? Friends of Blodgett Peak Open Space have two projects scheduled for May 26th and July 28th and they could really use your help. They are a new Friends Group with ambitious plans. The plan this summer is to close a number of social trails and work on older trails to prevent and repair erosion. If you'd like to help Janet Voss and her group of committed volunteers, check the calendar on those days - 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. As one of the youngest Friends Groups in the region, they need you!

Guardians of Palmer Park have secured a small trailer for storing tools. Now they are raising money for a sturdy gate to cut down on overnight vandalism. The Guardians are one of the region's most active Friends Groups. Once or twice a month volunteers are out painting, picking up litter and dog poop, removing grafitti and maintaining trails. They have recruited willing and committed volunteers, but could use more help. If you'd like to make a donation, contact Tom Howe at

1. Choose an open space or park/or pick a day on the calendar with a project
2. Find the "Friends Group" maintaining the property and hosting the work event
3. Link to their site, register for a project and get to work!
Drastic cuts to Colorado Springs' Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department have dramatically reduced staff. Parks can no longer "manage" an effective volunteer program at a point in history when volunteers have never been so needed. The answer? The Trails and Open Space Coalition, coordinating with Parks staff and Friends groups have developed this website to connect you with projects.
